We have been working this past year to gain a deeper understanding of issues surrounding Elder Mediation. This is a growing area of need and we are reaching out to those of you who are potentially interested in doing Elder Mediations.

The objective of this training is for participants to understand:

  • ageism and the problems and issues faced by older adults and their families
  • the mental and physical effects of aging and how to accommodate those changes so as to maximize participation in the decision making process of the older adult and other mediation participants
  • capacity issues (including elder abuse) and their effect on conducting a safe and fair mediation process
  • ethical issues and the unique challenge of elder mediation
  • the role and use of support persons/advocates in elder mediation

Trainers:

Ona Lawrence, Conflict Resolution Center’s St. Cloud Program Director, is a mediator and conflict coach. She co-teaches and provides training support for CRC’s mediator trainings in St. Cloud, including 30 Hour Civil Facilitative Hybrid Mediation training and Conflict Consulting training. Ona teaches mediation skills to volunteers working with youth, mentors school mediators and mediators working in the Elder Mediation Program and teaches Conflict Resolution Education to youth in St. Cloud high schools. Ona co-teaches conflict resolution and communication skills and Family Conferencing to staff in area nonprofits. Ona has a Master’s degree in Gerontology from St. Cloud State University.

Marit Peterson, from the Elder Justice Center, has deep experience with Elder Law and will share information on elder abuse, barriers that prevent elders from reporting, capacity issues, substitute or supported decision-making relationships that may impact the older clients.
