Event Details

Institute Dates and Locations:

Union City Institute
June 13-15, 2017 (additional leadership session on June 16)

San Diego Institute
August 1-3, 2017 (additional leadership session on August 4)

This three-day intensive institute, led by Leading with Learning at WestEd, is designed to help participants better understand and be able to implement — or facilitate implementation of — effective instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

The institute will deepen and broaden participants’ understanding of the California ELA/ELD Framework and the California ELD Standards in order to plan for and support instruction of integrated and designated ELD. The ELA/ELD Framework is California’s comprehensive approach to ensuring that all EL students develop academic literacy, analytical practices, and deep content understandings across the disciplines.

Professional learning will be differentiated in four grade spans (TK-1, 2-3, 4-6, and Middle School content areas of ELA/History and Science/Math). Site and district-level leadership teams and site-level instructional teams are highly encouraged to participate together in the three-day institute for optimal learning and implementation.

An additional leadership session, designed for site and district leaders, offered on a fourth day will focus on site and district level implementation and systems support planning addressing aspects such as curriculum, multiple program components, and sustaining effective instructional practices in order to ensure high-quality teaching and learning experiences for all students.

The institute will focus on strengthening teaching and learning in four major areas:

  • Fostering collaborative academic conversations among students, abundant writing, and interactive reading around complex texts and intellectually rich content
  • Engaging students in text-oriented talk about the language in complex texts
  • Observing students closely to provide both planned and just-in-time scaffolding
  • Creating positive and culturally responsive learning environments

Participants will engage in collaborative, interactive tasks:

  • Discussing key readings from the ELA/ELD Framework, including those related to integrated and designated ELD and culturally responsive teaching
  • Participating in and analyzing standards-based, framework-aligned “keystone pedagogies” and model lessons and units
  • Sharing and developing new ideas about scaffolding student learning, formative assessment, and equity; and establishing positive learning environments in which all learners can thrive

 Who should attend?

  • School and district teams of teacher leaders
  • Coaches, principals, district staff
  • Interested district and county office leaders
  • University teacher education faculty
  • Interested community organizations
