El Paso in Austin's Scholars Reception, an annual fundraiser for our scholarship for El Paso high school graduates attending college in the Austin area, is less than a month away!

We're honored to welcome guest speaker Benjamin Alire Sáenz, the El Paso-based award-winning author of poetry and prose for adults and teens. Sáenz won the PEN/Faulkner Award for his collection of short stories, Everything Begins and Ends at the Kentucky Club. His young adult novel, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, won numerous awards, including being named a Printz Honor Book and winning the Lambda Literary Award. Other accoaldes include being a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award, among many, many others. He's been featured on NPR, and in Texas Monthly and Entertainment Weekly, among other periodicals. He teaches creative writing at UTEP. Sáenz's latest work is a book of poetry, The Last Cigarette On Earth, published by Cinco Puntos Press.

The Scholars Reception will be hosted on the rooftop at 1220 Colorado Street, with beautiful views of the Texas Capitol and Downtown Austin. Ample parking is available on Colorado.

The evening includes an open bar and small foods, a silent auction, and camaraderie with other El Pasoans in Austin! Plus: Sáenz has generously offered to sell signed copies of his books—with proceeds benefiting our scholarship!
