Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

Join First Church members and friends for a four-part immigration series featuring the classic 1983 film El Norte, directed by Gregory Nava. On Thursday evenings, November 2, 9, and 16, at 7:00 PM, participants will view, react to, and discuss the three sections of this Spanish and Quiché language film with English subtitles.

In Part I Arturo Xuncax, we meet the Guatemalan Maya Quiché family—parents Arturo and Lupe, their daughter Rosa, and their son Enrique. Set during the Guatemalan Civil War (1960-1996) viewers experience the daily life of the Guatemalan rural poor.

In Part II El Coyote, Rosa and Enrique decide to escape the Civil War. They travel by truck and bus across Mexico and cross the border into California.

Part III The North portrays their lives as undocumented workers in Los Angeles. The film contains extreme violence and is not suitable for children.

Vicki and Roger Berger, Laura Ilardo, and Daniel Rodriguez will guide discussions following the viewings.

This series will increase your knowledge of history and literature, as well as expand your thinking about the treatment and future of the rural poor and undocumented workers. Join us as we thoughtfully and prayerfully consider these difficult topics together. Content questions? Contact Vicki Berger at v.berger@cox.net or (602) 256-9457.
