Event description
Effectively Underemployed - Why American Workers Continue to Struggle Despite Strong Jobs Reports: Introducing The JQI

About this Event

Please join us for the historic launch of the U.S. Private Sector Job Quality Index (JQI)®, developed by researchers at the Program on the Law and Regulation of Financial Institutions and Markets of the Jack G. Clarke Institute at Cornell University Law School (Cornell-Clarke), the Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA), the University of Missouri – Kansas City Department of Economics (UMKC), and the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity (GISP).

The JQI is a new economic indicator generated on a monthly basis. The JQI shows changes in the quality of the U.S. jobs base by tracking the relative numbers of high-wage/high-hours goods-producing (and some service) jobs, and low-wage/low-hour positions. The long term trend of increasing dominance of low-wage, low-hour jobs has resulted in low household income growth, higher income inequality and overall U.S. economic growth below its potential.

"Effectively Underemployed - Why American Workers Continue to Struggle Despite Strong Jobs Reports: Introducing The U.S. Private Sector Job Quality Index (JQI)®” will feature a presentation from the four authors.

Who: Daniel Alpert, adjunct professor at Cornell Law School, a senior fellow in macroeconomics and finance at the school’s Jack C. Clarke Business Law Institute (Cornell-Clarke) and founding managing partner of the investment bank, Westwood Capital, LLC.

Jeff Ferry, chief economist at the Coalition for a Prosperous America (CPA), a non-partisan association of U.S. labor and manufacturing interests.

Robert C. Hockett, the Edward Cornell Professor of Law, specializing in finance and economics, at Cornell Law School.

Amir Khaleghi, a Research Fellow at the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity (GISP) and a PhD student in economics at the University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC).

The program will be moderated by Jared Bernstein, Senior Fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, and the former Chief Economist and Economic Adviser to Vice President Joseph Biden during the Obama Administration.

When: Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019 (8am - 10am)

Where: National Press Club, 529 14th St NW, Washington, DC 20045

Please RSVP by Friday, November 8.
