Event description

Description

Need feedback from your program participants? Want to know what your staff thought of the team retreat? Interested in input from community members on a new initiative? Survey them! Interview them! Ask them to join a focus group! Data collection has become ubiquitous in our practice, yet “garbage in, garbage out” is a frequent refrain: a poorly designed survey instrument or focus group guide yields confusing, unusable data. This is frustrating considering the resources organizations spend on planning and carrying out data collection, and the effort respondents spend on answering all those questions. Often, non-profits do not have internal staff capacity for managing data collection, nor the resources to hire an external expert. So, the task of collecting and interpreting the ever-increasing amount of feedback falls on … someone. Are you that someone?

In this workshop, we will review the basic considerations of starting a data collection project and designing well-crafted questions. We will discuss options for gathering information, such as surveying, interviewing, focus grouping, and other common strategies, and when each is the right tool to use. Then, we will practice creating survey, interview, and focus group questions using best practices for writing questions and answer choices. We will also touch on sampling, piloting, informed consent, and facilitation. The next time a project like this falls into your to-do list, you will feel more prepared to collect quality data.
This interactive workshop will take the form of a focus group, in which we will engage in a sample discussion and pause at key intervals to parallel process the practice of focus grouping, with plenty of time for participants’ questions throughout. The next time a focus group project falls into your to-do list, you will feel more prepared to collect quality data.

Key Takeaways:

  • Learn how to plan and carry out a data collection project
  • Explore data collection methods and identify scenarios in which to use them
  • Identify and write well-crafted questions

This workshop will be presented by Lina Cherfas, Consultant | A Good Question
