Introduction

While working together in groups can be fun, it's not always easy. How can we collaborate with each other without replicating hierarchical structures or getting too bogged-down in group process?

Specifically designed for those working together towards social change, this dynamic, participatory training will provide you with everything you need to build organizational capacity and skillfully navigate the inevitable ups and downs of group life.

Over the course of six weekly sessions, you will learn, discuss, and practice how to:

  • Set ground rules that help foster a healthy group culture

  • Clarify and develop shared purpose and direction

  • Communicate in a way that invites deeper collaboration

  • Transform conflicts into opportunities for growth

  • Run efficient, inclusive, and enjoyable meetings

  • Choose among a variety of decision-making strategies

  • Cultivate a team that functions like a mature ecosystem

  • Sustain member motivation and involvement over time

Because a group's outer success depends largely on the quality of its internal relationships, learning how to work more effectively together may be the most important investment you can make in your organization's future.

In addition to focusing on a specific case study that’s relevant to you and answering your toughest questions, we will also explore collaboration between groups and how to integrate lessons learned into your daily life.

Who Is It For?

This course is open to English-speakers from all over the world who wish to cultivate more collaborative and effective groups.

How Does It Work?

This training will consist of a series of five pre-recorded video presentations and six 1.5-hour live webinars featuring interactive exercises and group discussions on that week's topics. We will also provide you with access to a private forum that you can use to share resources and continue conversations in between sessions. Please don't worry if you are unfamiliar with any of these technologies! We will make sure that everyone who registers receives clear instructions about how best to use them.

Sessions at a Glance

  1. Introduction to Effective Collaboration (July 11): an overview of the Stages of Group Development and how to balance action with reflection.

  2. Forming with Purpose (July 18): establishing group agreements and defining your vision, mission, strategy, and objectives.

  3. Navigating Stormy Seas (July 25): analyzing power dynamics and practicing Nonviolent Communication.

  4. Meetings That Don’t Suck (August 1): key facilitation skills, crafting agendas, and blended decision-making.

  5. Next-Level Performance (August 8): building your ideal core team and forming partnerships, networks, and coalitions that reach far beyond it.

  6. Bringing It All Back Home (August 15): filling in the gaps and sharing what you’ve learned with your group.

About Registration

We are currently offering three main sign-up options: a $90 Standard Ticket to cover the costs of producing this course, a $45 Scholarship Ticket for anyone who needs it, and a $135 Sponsor Ticket to subsidize scholarships. However, in keeping with our commitment to accessibility and inclusion, we are happy to provide additional financial assistance for those who request it. Also, because we believe in the value of having more than one person from each organization attend this training, group discounts are available.

Your Facilitators

Don Hall is a skilled facilitator and certified trainer with 17 years of experience as a social activist and community organizer. While drawing inspiration and insight from his involvement with groups as diverse as the Students for a Free Tibet, Outward Bound Discovery, and the Chrysalis Housing Cooperative, Don's primarily focus over the past decade has been on growing local food systems, strengthening local economies, and reducing dependence on fossil fuels through the international Transition Towns movement. He holds a Master's degree in Environmental Leadership from Naropa University and currently serves as Co-Director of Transition US.

Nick Osborne is an entrepreneur in the business of shifting paradigms. He is a partner with HolacracyOne, a co-founder of Conscious Collaboration (with whom he works as a Trainer & Consultant), and was in the first wave of Transition Trainers. With a wide range of experience in different sectors as an employee, leader, consultant, changemaker, and entrepreneur, Nick has a fascination for how people learn and work together. He works to catalyse the transition to a way of thinking and living which addresses, rather than contributes to, today’s challenges. Nick's work upgrades the way we learn, collaborate, and run our organisations to enable better fit for the volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous conditions of the 21st century.
