Event description

Description

We are proud to announce this years Edward W. Said Memorial Lecturer, Moustafa Bayoumi. A former student of Edward Said’s, Professor Bayoumi is currently a professor of English at Brooklyn College, City University of New York (CUNY).

Description of lecture: What does the 1960 large-scale multi-artist painting Le Grand Tableau Antifasciste Collectif, produced to denounce French atrocities in the war in Algeria, have to do with contemporary journalism around the War on Terror? How has social media expanded our possibilities for limited thinking? Why must we constantly remember that the struggle for the liberation of Palestine has never been solely about Palestinians but about human emancipation more generally? And on what axis can we begin to answer these seemingly disparate questions? In this lecture, Professor Bayoumi will discuss the idea of state and stateless imaginations, and why the latter is necessary today, more than ever.
