Event description

Taking Off The Mask Workshop

The Ever Forward Club invites community leaders and teachers to forge new partnerships and work across the boundaries to further educate ourselves in ways to help our young men: Male youth in particular often do not have safe spaces for emotional development and identity exploration and our workshop allows you to remove your mask enabling you to further educate others. "Please note this is a workshop for everyone but our organization specializes in catering towards young men."

This workshop was created by Ashanti Branch, M.Ed. and featured in the documentary "The Mask You Live In". For many boys across America, living up to male stereotypes, burying emotions, and feeling alone is the norm. From suicide to substance abuse to violence, society's narrow definition of what it means to "be a man" is creating a host of unintended consequences, for young men as individuals and for our society as a whole.

This will be an experiential opportunity with practical exercises in taking off your own mask. The workshop is primarily for those working directly with youth and will be heartfelt in nature rather than an intellectual note-taking session. The workshop will be open to adults who are already working with young men, want to try to contribute to the community through leadership or are raising a boy and want to learn how to build a lasting emotional connection.

• Adding to emotional toolbox.

• Providing young men with strategies for dealing with life’s challenges.

• To develop a deeper knowledge of self and stronger relationships with others.

Ever Forward/ Siempre Adelante was founded by Ashanti Branch in 2004 with the help of young men at San Lorenzo High School. While teaching mathematics Ashanti observed the young men of color in his classes seemed to be moving backward in academic and social-emotional competencies. To reverse this current he launched the Club program so at-risk young men may gather in a mentor-led safe environment, process emotions and learn to invest in themselves. The EF/SA Club is the only in-school support program of its kind to empower young men of color to overcome the adversity and violence they may face in their communities every day.

Clubs are lead by trained mentors and cultivate peer-to-peer interactions so the young men develop a reliable support network. This learning context encourages social-emotional development and facilitates Club members achieving their life goals. Young men develop increased self-awareness, self- management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.1 The proof is in the outcomes; to date the Club program boasts a 100% high school graduation rate. Our programs prepare young men for their careers and to become leaders in their communities.

We have facilitaded this workshop with over 10,000 people and The Ever Forward Club's work is featured in a documentary by The Representation Project called "The Mask You Live In" that premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival
