Event description

Description

Are you a K-12 educator interested in learning about global arts? Join us at the Fowler Museum's FREE educator workshop, Presenting Our Identities: Examining Attire and Adornment in Borneo, on Saturday, March 2, 2019.

During this half-day workshop at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, educators are invited to explore interdisciplinary and multicultural connections between visual art and the "presentation of self," a process by which we each express our layered identities to those around us.

Eligibility

Open to K-12 educators of all backgrounds. Enrollment is limited, and registration is required.

Cost

The Fowler Museum is proud to offer this workshop free of charge. The Fowler Museum will also provide free parking to all registered attendees.

About this Educator Workshop

This program features three primary facilitators: Cameron Taylor-Brown, artist, consultant, and educator at ARTSgarage; Dr. Joanna Barrkman, Senior Curator of Southeast Asian and Pacific Arts, Fowler Museum; and Allison Clark, Assistant Director of Education, Fowler Museum. You'll begin the day by connecting with fellow educators over breakfast treats before Dr. Joanna Barrkman discusses the customary attire of the indigenous peoples of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia during a private gallery tour. These objects will contextualize the afternoon's hands-on art-making workshop, in which you'll define the term "identity" before individually creating a small item of adornment with Cameron Taylor-Brown.

Workshop Objectives

After attending this program, you'll be ready to...

  • Identify, describe, and discuss how identity may be presented through visual art and material culture
  • Translate an aspect of your personal and/or professional identity into an artwork using mixed media
  • Incorporate the visual arts into language arts by exploring art as a vehicle that communicates individual and community expressions of identity

(Just to name a few!)

LAUSD Salary Point Credit

After attending this workshop, LAUSD educators are eligible for 4.25 PD hours.
