K-6 Educator Summit on Supporting Transgender and Nonbinary Students

Presented by Transforming Families MN, Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition w/ Welcoming Schools

School staff and administrators often find themselves in uncharted territory when transgender and nonbinary elementary school students request support from their school community. Join us for this engaging and transformative training where participants will learn best practices to create affirming, supportive and caring school climates for students of all genders!

About our Speakers:

Keynote Speaker Roxanne Anderson

Roxanne Anderson is an award winning community activist who’s been working in social service for 20+ years. Roxanne was most recently named as a 2018 Fellow by the Bush Foundation. They were also honored in December 2017 with The Stellar Award for Outstanding Transgender Adult of the Year. Other awards include: The Beautiful Humans Award for the work of RARE Productions in LGBTQI2S Media for its coverage of cutting edge and emerging POC artists; the University of Minnesota’s Community Excellence Award; Lavender Magazine’s 100 Fab Community Organizer Award; Twin Cities Black Pride Community Service Award for Diversity and Inclusion; and featured in Curve magazine for community leadership.

Currently, Rox is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition, and is a highly sought after facilitator on topics including LGBTQ identities, Cultural Competency, Trans Awareness, ally-ship, Strategic Planning, Organizational Development, and Business Start Ups.

Dave Edwards has served as special education teacher in Chicago Public Schools, a teacher and administrator in several MN public school districts, and is currently the lead instructor in the residency-based Emotional Behavioral Disorders licensure program at the University of MN Twin Cities. He is also a 3rd year PhD student, funded by an Office of Special Education Programs Leadership Training grant.

As a Welcoming Schools facilitator, the nation's premier professional development program dedicated to creating inclusive school climates, Dave provides professional development and consultation to school staff and administrators. He is a board member of the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition and part of the leadership team with Transforming Families MN.

Lenny Hayes is an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton-Oyate of the northeast corner of South Dakota and identifies as a Two-Spirit Male. He is owner and operator of Tate Topa Consulting, LLC in which he is in private practice as a Mental and Chemical Health Therapist. Lenny also provides training to organizations locally and nationally to bring awareness and education on the impact of Historical and Intergenerational Trauma on the Native Community as well as the Two-Spirit/Native LGBTQ community.

Lenny is a Board member to the First Nations Repatriation Institute., Advisory Committee Member with the Capacity Building Center for Tribes, Two-Spirit/Native LGBTQ Advisory Committee Member for the Center for Native American Youth, Washington, D.C., LGBTQ Advisory Co-Chair Council Member for the Southwest Indigenous Women’s Coalition, Advisory Board Member for the National Quality Improvement Center (QIC) on Tailored Services, Placement Stability and Permanency for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, and Two-Spirit Children and Youth in Foster Care, Committee Member for ACE-DV Leadership Forum with the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, and a former Council Member for the MN HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care Council.

Quinn Villagomez AKA Shimmer is a Broadcast Journalist, host and MC. Shimmer Co-Hosts RARE on Fresh Fruit on KFAI - 90.3 FM Minneapolis - 106.7 FM St. Paul: the longest running LGBTQ radio program in the nation.

Quinn identifies as a Hispanic Woman of Color and a Transgender Woman. While Quinn has definitely seen the struggles of being a minority, and dealt with the criticisms the LGB & Transgender Community face in today's society, this has not stopped Quinn from following her dreams and succeeding in her passion of Radio/Media. Quinn is board secretary for the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition.
