Event description

Description

This presentation will provide an overview of educational stability needs for children and youth in foster care, with a focus on the role of the foster care provider. Recent federal and state legislation related to both education and child welfare has created new requirements for the education of students in out-of-home placement. As a result of these changes, best practices in child welfare have shifted in order to better meet students’ educational needs. This presentation will clarify and contextualize these changes and the motivations behind them. We will explore how children in placements are better served by these new practices, as well as how caregivers can support their implementation. The presentation will dispel myths and rumors about school stability and examine the benefits to caregivers that come with the new school stability policies.

About the instructor:

Samantha Garrett is the Education Specialist at the Colorado Department of Human Services, Division of Child Welfare. A Colorado native, Samantha has dedicated her career to supporting children, youth, and families in various capacities. She earned her teaching credential from the Grinnell College Teacher Education Program in Grinnell, Iowa, and she began her career as a teacher at a high school in Colorado Springs. After six years in the classroom, she went to graduate school to pursue new avenues to support families, earning a Master of Social Work from the University of Chicago and a Master of Divinity from the Chicago Theological Seminary. Samantha has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including prisons, residential mental health facilities, and hospitals. After returning to Colorado, she worked as an in-home therapist for at-risk adolescents and their families across the Denver Metro Area. In her current role as Education Specialist at CDHS, Samantha combines her experience as both an educator and a clinician in support of statewide efforts to improve educational outcomes for children and youth engaged in the child welfare system. Her current area of focus seeks to decrease the number of times students change schools during out-of-home placement in order to support academic, social, and emotional stability at school.

This is a free event. Childcare provided. Adams County foster parents should register their childcare needs in advance with the childcare providers in the foster care unit. 2 training hours will be earned.
