Event description

Description

Panelists Gregg Deal, Dr. Jamie Hodgkins, Lisa Calderón, Dr. Patty Limerick, and Tamara Banks will discuss symbolic violence, cultural racism, and our community. Tamara White will moderate the dialogue.

What is symbolic violence, cultural racism and why does it matter to the residents of Denver and their surrounding communities?

Every single day we make seemingly insignificant choices as residents interacting within our community. But have you ever considered the impact of some of those choices? Symbolic violence and cultural racism contribute to the maintenance of the existing social order to the detriment of neighbors within our community. How have your interactions with schools, law enforcement, neighborhood social networks and local businesses, friends and neighbors caused damage?

Join us for a discussion which we hope will be enlightening and allow us all to reflect on what role we play in symbolic violence and cultural racism, why the community name matters, and why the name is only the start. We have work to do!

Find out how you can take action, immediately following the discussion. Visit with community organizers, activists, and representatives from a variety of groups to find out what they are doing to combat racism and other injustices in Denver and surrounding areas. We have an incredible network of social justice warriors right here in Colorado. We are more powerful together!
