Join the Sarasota Anti-Racism Working group for a webinar series exploring ways to undo racism within schools for educational equity

About this Event

Join the Sarasota Anti-Racism Working Group for a series of events focusing on Educational Equity within the Sarasota County School District. There are a number of opportunities to eliminate persistent racial gaps in performance and educational outcomes, racial disparities in discipline, and racialized opportunity gaps in the district. We will explore these opportunities as well as the challenges with the aim of organizing our community to work towards a more equitable future.

Webinar 1: February 12-13, 2021 - Black Lives Still Matter Symposium

This two day symposium will feature a panel discussion by the organizing committee of Black Lives Still Matter at School. For more information and to register for this two day symposium, please visit:

Webinar 2: March 11, 2021 - Building Student Support Networks, 7-8:30 PM

School safety and supporting students in staying connected with school and learning opportunities are integrally related. Restorative justice practices appear to be most promising for reducing school-wide reliance on suspension and expulsion, and for reducing racial/ethnic disparities in school discipline. By choosing a different course, all young people, including those most marginalized, can be safe and engaged in their schools and communities.

Webinar 3: April 8 - Closing the Racial Opportunity Gap, 7:00-8:30 PM

Racialized opportunity gaps impact that access, performance and achievement of students of color. In this workshop, we will learn more about the size and impact of the opportunity gaps impacting black children. We will also discuss initiatives and ideas that work to ensure equitable access to learning opportunities.

Webinar 4: May 13 - Designing an Anti-Racist Curriculum - 7:00-9:00 PM

In this webinar, we will explore the possibilities and limitations of developing an anti-racism curriculum in Sarasota. The Florida Legislature has mandated the teaching of African and African American History [F.S. 233.061 Sec. (1) (G) (1994) as amended by F.S. 1003.42 (h) (2002)] . Additionally, local community organizations such as Newtown Alive have documented local African American history and/or created resources that can be incorporated into the curriculum.
