The Education Institute of Hawaii (EIH) is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Hawaii School Empowerment Conference to be held on Sunday, January 24, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m. at the Hawaii Convention Center.


Opening Remarks by First Lady Dawn Ige and Hawaii Board of Education Chairman Lance Mizumoto followed by featured keynote speakers who are some of the most respected and prominent voices on education reform – Diane Ravitch, Pasi Sahlberg, Catherine Payne, and Ray McNulty.


Diane Ravitch is the author of the New York Times bestseller, "Reign of Error" and her Internet blog is the primary destination for American educators, receiving more than 24 million hits. She is considered “the nation’s leading advocate for public education.”

Pasi Sahlberg is the author of the bestseller, "Finnish Lessons 2.0 – What can the world learn from educational change in Finland". He is presently a visiting professor at Harvard University and was the former Director General at the Finland Ministry of Education, and former leader of the top performing school system in the world.

Catherine Payne is one our most admired, respected, and accomplished of school leaders in Hawaii. She retired as the Principal of Farrington High School, is a former State Secondary Principal of the Year, and a recipient of the prestigious National Milken Educator Award. She presently serves as the Chairperson of the Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission.

Ray McNulty is the author of "It's Not Us Against Them - Creating the Schools We Need". He is presently a Senior Fellow and past President of the International Center for Leadership in Education. Previously he has been a Senior Fellow at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, past President of the Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development (ASCD), and an Education Commissioner for Vermont.


Additionally, the award winning educational documentary film, "Most Likely to Succeed" will be screened before and after the conference for anyone who has not yet seen this important and excellent film on education reform. EIH has completed an agreement with the filmmaker for unlimited screenings of "Most Likely to Succeed" in Hawaii. School Principals will be able to reserve at the conference a DVD or Blu-Ray disk of the film for use with their faculty, parent, and student groups.

This conference will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for Hawaii principals, teachers, parents, students, education leaders, and community leaders to learn from two of the top thought leaders in public education and school empowerment.

  5. Proceed approximately ½ mile

  2. Proceed approximately 1.5 miles (Note: King Street changes to Beretania Street)
