About this Event

Education in Africa: A Talk with Peter Tabichi, Global Teacher Prize Winner

The McCourt School of Public Policy is pleased to host Peter Tabichi, winner of the 2019 Global Teacher Prize.

Mr. Tabichi is a mathematics and science teacher at the Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in the Pwani Village in rural Kenya. Through his unique ability to foster students’ self-esteem, Peter has dramatically improved his pupils’ achievement. Enrollment at Keriko has doubled over three years, and the achievement of girls in particular has been boosted, with girls now leading boys in all four tests set in the last year. His innovative and passionate pedagogical approaches have resulted in his students competing in national and international science competitions.

In addition to his work as a teacher, Mr. Tabichi is devoted to peace-building. In response to ethnic violence in Kenya, he established a Peace Club which brings together people in his local community, and provides assistance to address local issues like food insecurity. Peter is a Franciscan Brother who donates over 80% of his salary to these and other community projects.

In conversation with James Habyarimana, a Provost’s Distinguished Associate Professor at Georgetown’s McCourt School, Mr. Tabichi will discuss his work as a teacher and community leader in rural Kenya, and the importance of access to high-quality education for youth in Africa. The event will take place on September 16, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Old North 205. A networking reception with light refreshments will follow the event. This event is cosponsored by the AfriKa and EduWonks student groups.

The Varkey Foundation believes in a quality education for every child. Together with their partners, Varkey works to build the capacity and status of teachers to ensure that the quality of teaching is enhanced, and outcomes will improve. They established the million dollar Global Teacher Prize to spotlight the importance of the teaching profession.
