This workshop is presented by Dr. Michael Dominguez, Assistant Professor from UNC Chapel Hill, Rebecca Olsen, SIOP Trainer for Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, and Simone Wertenberger, ESL/Migrant Education Director for Henderson County Schools. The morning session will focus on creating culturally inclusive classrooms and the afternoon session will focus on best practices for teaching English Language Learners and will include time for teachers to modify lesson plans using the new methodologies they have learned. Attendees should bring a copy of their students’ ESL scores and at least one lesson plan. Wifi will be available.
Participants will need to read two articles prior to the workshop (the articles will be emailed to you). Participants will be recommended for .8 CEU for attending the workshop, and 1 CEU if they also complete a post-assignment.
This workshop is open to teacher licensure students at UNC Asheville, teachers (including ESL teachers) and guidance counselors in our partner school districts (Asheville, Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, McDowell, Transylvania, Francine Delany, Evergreen, and Art Space Charter), and teachers and counselors in UNC Asheville's GEAR UP partner school districts.
Participation is free. Speaker fees are covered by GEAR UP and the Teacher Recruitment Office at UNC Asheville.
