We are reaching out to invite you, a valued stakeholder in the learning for all students in California K-12 schools, to join us for


Accelerating Learning for All Students Through The

Transformative Power of Technology

On Tuesday, August 13th, The Education Trust-West, Education Pioneers, Full Circle Fund, NewSchools Venture Fund, the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation and Digital Promise will host key leaders from across the state are coming together to discuss how the Common Core State Standards and digital learning are coming together to transform K-12 education and how we should plan for that shift.

Our goal is to accelerate the design, implementation, and ongoing improvement of a fully aligned digital ecosystem necessary to improve student learning, implement the Common Core, and provide access to the personalized power of the digital world to each student in California.

The discussion and activities will center on leveraging technology, the $1.25 billion for Common Core implementation, and billions of dollars in additional state funding for schools to enhance Common Core implementation.

Call to Action

This will be an interactive session in which California State Board of Education President Mike Kirst and others describe the policy context, frame the opportunity before us, and explain how we will collaborate throughout the day.

Opening Comments – Arun Ramanathan, Education Trust –West

9:45 am – 10:30 am

Networking Activity: Building our Network

An activity for us to get to know each other and what we each bring to the table.

10:30 am – 11:30 am

Building the Digital Ecosystem: Instructional shifts

Michael Horn of the Clayton Christensen Institute for Disruptive Innovation and several district and CMO leaders will lead a discussion and share examples of the paradigm shift taking place in instructional practice.

11:30 am – 12:45 pm

Building the Digital Ecosystem: Marketplace

Entrepreneurs, technology leaders, and those they are working with will share examples of how technology can be used to enhance Common Core implementation. There will be opportunities to provide input and feedback about your specific goals and challenges.

12:45 pm – 1:45 pm

Networking Lunch

Opportunities for informal conversations.

1:45 pm – 3:00 pm

Building the digital ecosystem: Infrastructure

Evan Marwell of Education SuperHighway and Michael Steffen of the Federal Communication Commission will discuss the federal ConnectED initiative, the importance of infrastructure to support the other elements of the ecosystem, and the role of districts and business communities in infrastructure development.

3:00 pm – 4:45 pm

Prototyping a new Digital Ecosystem

Small groups will rapidly prototype a plan for how a hypothetical district will utilize new and existing funds to implement Common Core State Standards and develop “new and higher services.”

4:45 pm – 5:30 pm

From Prototype to Implementation

A chance to share outcomes and insights from the prototyping session and discuss how we might build from the day’s work to expand and implement plans for using education technology in Common Core implementation.

Closing Comments –Karen Cator, Digital Promise

5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

Reception and networking

An onsite opportunity to continue discussions and collaborations begun throughout the day.
