Event description

If you are a parent or guardian of an upcoming 6th-grader, please join us for a tour of Edna Brewer Middle School. Come and learn about the academic and extracurricular programs that make our school a top choice for Oakland families.

You will visit classrooms and the campus, followed by a Q&A session. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of Brewer administrative staff, parents of current students, and a panel of 6th-8th grade students.

Check-in and tours begin in the school library, across the hall from the school office. Please be sure to RSVP for the total number in your group. We look forward to meeting you!

FAQs (please read before contacting us):

What are my transport/parking options?

There is parking on the streets surrounding the school, but we recommend giving yourself plenty of time (at least 15 minutes) to find parking and walk to the school, as you may need to park several blocks away. Arriving early will also get you a cup of coffee and a good seat!

AC Transit line 18 stops right by the school, on Park Blvd at E. 38th St.

Where do I go on the day of the tour?

Please enter the school through the left set of doors as you face the school on 13th Ave. (this is the entry closest to E. 38th St.). Go up the stairs and turn right: check-in will be in the library, across from the school office.

What actually happens on the tour?

We will begin the morning with a short introductory/informational session at 8:30 sharp, to help you better understand what you will be seeing on the tour. You will then tour classrooms and the campus with a parent guide in groups of 10-12, returning to the library for a Q&A session with administrative staff and students. The session ends at 10:30, but administrators will stay to answer questions one-on-one until 10:45.

Can I bring my child?

You are welcome to bring your child, but if you don't want him/her to miss school there are other opportunities for prospective students to tour Brewer. There will be an Evening Informational Event in November that is highly recommended for both parents and prospective students (click here for more information, and to reserve your spot/s). Also, the four elementary schools closest to Brewer usually have a field trip for their entire 5th-grade class to tour the school (check with your child's 5th grade teacher to see if this is something that his/her school has done previously).

How many people can I bring?

We ask participants to keep their group to a maximum of 3 people. There is limited space, both in terms of our ability to lead groups for the tours and in the library for the Q&A session. If you have a larger group, we ask you to bring them to the Evening Informational Event in November, as we will be able to accomodate more people (click here for more information, and to reserve your spot/s).

Are these events appropriate for families looking to transfer from another middle school?

These tours are mostly focused on 6th grade classrooms and activities. For families interested in a transfer opportunity for their 7th or 8th-grader, you are welcome to contact the Brewer office directly to arrange a grade-specific tour.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No -- we will have a check-in list when you arrive.

Where can I contact the organizer with any other questions?
