Event description

Description

After its successful world premier production in San Francisco, Edith Wharton’s The Bunner Sisters—adapted by Richard Alleman and directed by Anthony Newfield—will have a reading at The Mount. Inspired by Wharton’s novella, the play depicts the lives of two unmarried sisters living and working as seamstresses in a tenement in Lower Manhattan in the 1880s. When an unattached man enters the picture, their complacent existence is upended. Sensitively adapted for the stage, The Bunner Sisters takes audiences on a dramatic journey to a not so innocent age, with many of the same problems we face today—from income inequality to the precarious status of women.

Richard Alleman has written for Vogue, Travel + Leisure, and numerous other publications.

Actor-director Anthony Newfield is a veteran of New York theater and is currently appearing in 1984 on Broadway.

The Mount is a Massachusetts Cultural Council UP designated organization welcoming participants of all disabilities. Please contact Nicole Williams at 413-551-5100 or by email, nwilliams@edithwharton.org, to discuss accommodations needed to participate fully in this event. Caregivers are admitted free-of-charge.
