About this event

While the great American novelist Edith Wharton is most often recognized for her incisive, deftly written novels surrounding New York's Gilded Age, much of those works were penned long after she left New York and relocated to France. What drew Wharton to adopt Paris as her home, and how did this newfound European abode affect her writings? This is the story of one of the most prolific novelists of all time and her time spent in the glamorous and vibrant "City of Light."

Join New York Adventure Club as we uncover the incredible life story of Edith Wharton and her time in Paris during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Led by writer, lecturer, and Wharton specialist Carl Raymond, our digital showcase of Edith Wharton and the city of Paris during that era will include:

  • An overview of Paris of the Belle Epoque that formed the backdrop for Wharton's life and many of her characters
  • A discussion of the exclusive aristocratic society that formed the social circles Wharton traveled in, and how French Society regarded her
  • Stories of famous artists who influenced her work including Henry James, Andre Gide, Jean Cocteay, and Marcel Proust (whom she never met)
  • A look at Wharton's personal life, from the reasons why Wharton left America and only returned for short visits to the details of her divorce and "secret" affair with an American journalist
  • A virtual peek inside Wharton's two homes outside of Paris including her beloved chateau and garden in the south of France

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A session with Carl — any and all questions about Edith Wharton are welcomed and encouraged!
