Description

Explorers Club Members, Associates/Friends & Members’ Guests, and Non-Members’ Guest List are cordially invited to the January 2019 ECWG dinner meeting at the Cosmos Club, with an after-dinner presentation by Trevor Wallace Saturday, 19 January 2019 at 6:00 PM

About the Presentation

The Scythians were a group of nomadic horse warriors that ruled the steppes of Eurasia from the 9th Century B.C.E. to about 100 B.C.E. They were widely feared in the ancient world and fought viciously against the Greeks, Persians, and Chinese. They had no written language but built elaborate burial mounds from the Black Sea all the way to Siberia that were filled with treasures for their chieftains to bring into the afterlife. Scythians were known for their elaborate gold work that depicted wild beasts entangled with mythical creatures and spectacular organic artifacts that have been preserved in permafrost. These frozen finds include wooden carvings, textiles, and tattoo-laden ice mummies.

Though they were a highly mobile culture with no large cities or settlements. They innovated, and produced the earliest known horse bridal technology, riding pants, and carpets. Trevor filmed the first excavation of the royal Scythian tomb Tunnug-1 in the ‘Valley of the Tsars’ in Siberia. The carbon dates of the wood from the grave chambers marked it as the oldest gravesite wood ever found, making the site an origin point for the culture.
