Event description

Description

Washington Group Explorers Club Members, Associates/Friends & Members’ Guests, and Non- Members’ Guest List are cordially invited to the November 2018 ECWG - Joint Meeting with Circumnavigators Dinner Meeting at the Cosmos Club Saturday, 17 November 2018 at 6:00 PM.

About the Presentation

Remarkable voyages during the 19th Century explored the frozen wastes of polar regions. These pioneering explorations opened routes for the early 20th Century “Heroic Age” of Antarctic discovery. Detailed narratives by Amundsen, Scott, Shackleton and others, of human perseverance in the face of terrible odds, continue to engage the popular imagination. Today, scientific exploration is revealing the global importance of polar research in fields as diverse as astrophysics and ecology. In this Explorers Club lecture, the interweaving themes of past, present, and future exploration of polar regions will be presented – with an eye to our future.

About Out Speaker

Donal T. Manahan, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles). He studies the biochemical strategies of “how life works” in different environments – from the warmest to the coldest on Earth.

For over 30 years he has been a Chief Scientist and Expedition Leader in Antarctica, where a geographic feature is named Manahan Peak in his honor. He is a lifelong educator, teaching and mentoring students at every level from freshman to Ph.D. He directed the first series of international training programs held in Antarctica to introduce many early-career scientists to studies of “extreme” biology in Antarctica.

He has held a range of leadership positions in science, helping to set priorities in research and education. These include (university-level): Department Chair, Research Institute Director, Dean of Research, Vice Dean for Students, and University Marshal. Nationally, he has served as Chair of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences’ Polar Research Board. He currently is a Division Director at the National Science Foundation. Donal is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for his contributions to research, and a National Associate of the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
