Event description

Description

Please join us for our first TEC Ecotherapy Mini-Conference and Self-Care Retreat! There will be opportunities for hiking, solo time in nature, CEU learning, and connecting with other therapists, counselors, and healing professionals who are interested in ecotherapy. We are primarily a group of mental health professionals (including counseling students and interns); however, anyone who is interested in ecotherapy and nature-based healing work may attend. You do not have to be practicing ecotherapy; you simply need to have an interest in and curiosity about this approach. We want to support everyone’s learning and growth, no matter their experience or training levels.

Who should attend?

Mental health professionals, counseling students and interns, and healing professionals (counselors, medical professionals, clergy, etc.) who are interested in learning more about ecotherapy and the Texas Ecotherapy Collective.

What will this event be like?

We are trying to create an event that will be interesting, connecting, and nourishing. There will opportunities for:

  • A group hike

  • Two speakers (CEUs provided for MSW, LPC, and MFT)

  • Long lunch to give time for conversation or solo time in nature

  • Group discussion and visioning: what do we want the Collective to look like in 2019?

Who are the speakers, and what are their topics?

John Garcia, Ed.D., LPC-S will speak on the topic of "The Naturally Therapeutic Atmosphere: A Living Metaphor For Environ-Mental Health"

  • The physical world abounds with figurative (metaphorical) illustrations that mirror the Western conceptualization of the mental world. These illustrations provide universal wisdom and guidance for deeper understanding of psyche and psychological hygiene. This presentation explores the structure and function of the earth’s atmosphere. It is this elegant and balanced vaporous envelope surrounding our planet that makes all life possible. Using the atmosphere as a metaphor, participants will gain increased awareness of how closely the physical world and mental world correspond. These resemblances are all around us, ever present, and immediately recognizable. In addition these resources are readily available to validate one’s unique experience, increase mindfulness, offer reassurance, and bring about new and more optimal ways of coping and living more fully.

Starla Simmons, LCSW will speak on the topic of "Practicing Ecotherapy Through a Cultural Lens"

  • In this session, we will discuss historical events and cultural factors that affect the relationship between communities of color and nature. This presentation will inspire reflection and discussion around cultural humility and ecotherapy.
