Description

Walk with an experienced forester to examine onsite impacts and consequences of the Hayman Wildfire on native plants, watershed conditions and ecology. See first hand how effective the restoration and recovery efforts have been over the past 15 years. This fire is the largest recorded fire in Colorado history.

Trainer: Milt Robinson is a certified Native Plant Master and volunteer naturalist for CO Parks and Wildlife. He retired from the U.S. Forest Service after serving in Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Washington, D.C. Most recently, he was a Professor and Director of the Environmental Policy and Management department at University of Denver.

When/Where to meet: Meet promptly at 9:00 AM in the parking lot behind the Deckers Store in Deckers, CO. We'll get acquainted, coordinate voluntary carpools and drive for approximately 20 minutes to the Hayman site. Directions to the Deckers Store: Take U.S. Highway 285 southwest to Pine. Turn left onto Highway 126 and take it south into Deckers approximately 25 miles to the Store.

What to bring: Water, snack or sack lunch, rain gear, sun and wind protection, personal items you will need on the trail where there are no restrooms, etc. Please come prepared for moderately strenuous walking on hot, cold, windy, rainy or snowy days. Optional item: A hand lens which can be purchased through the Colorado Native Plant Society at www.conps.org/Bookstore or online or local area scientific equipment retailers.

Native Plant Master: This class does not count towards Colorado Flora Certificate or certification as a Native Plant Master. To learn more, click here.

Carpooling: Carpooling is strongly encouraged. Contact npmassistant@jeffco.us if you would like to carpool to the meeting site and your contact information will be shared with others interested in carpooling. Participants will also have the option of carpooling to the Hayman fire site once at the meeting place in Deckers. Any liability arising from carpooling arrangements are the participants' sole responsibility.

Inclement Weather/Illness: In the rare circumstance that this class must be cancelled, you will be notified by phone and/or email message as soon as possible by the instructor. In case of cancellation, the make-up day for this class is July 1.
