Event description

Description

Join Coastal Plains Institute, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and WFSU Public Media staff to learn how you and your students can turn a phone or tablet into an incredible learning tool.

We start with SciStarter: a web tool designed to help you find the perfect citizen science project for your classroom, whether it's focused on stargazing, artificial intelligence, or getting in touch with nature. Searching the SciStarter database, you can find programs based nearby, or that can be done on a computer within a classroom.

Our featured SciStarter project is iNaturalist. This free app and website allows you to identify, document, and learn more about any organism that occupies your school grounds. While this teaching tool can be used anytime, Leon County is participating in the 2019 City Nature Challenge as part of FWC’s Backyards and Beyond program. Uploading iNaturalist observations between April 26-29 will help us take the lead in the challenge.

Using iNaturalist and engaging with other schoolyard habitat lessons FWC has created aligns closely with both state and national standards as well. Come learn more about these resources and opportunities that we are absolutely sure your students will love!

This professional development opportunity is free and open to the public, but registration is required as seating is limited.
