Event description

Description

Savannah is a wonderful place, with a sub-tropical climate, and an excellent source of nature found right outside our doors. Many of the trees, flowers, and leaves you see every day as you walk through the city hold the great secret of natural color. In this class of eco dyeing 101, we will discuss the process briefly before we start and talk about the history of natural dyes as our cauldrons bubble, and the magic happens.

Students will learn the exciting process, start to finish, of how to take locally sourced leaves and flowers, with the use of natural dyes and pantry items to coax color and print to create a wearable textile works of art.

We will transfer the impression of our natural items onto prepared silk scarves using a “bundling or wrap technique” (Rolling tightly and tied round with string) and then placing the scarves into a variety of prepared dye pots of fun natural dyes, (there will definitely be cochineal, those little bugs make a brilliant pink dye) or with no dye at all and steamed with water. Each student will leave with the confidence to continue to explore this creative art process on their own with handy take away guides of the process, and leave with your unique wearable art.

Class fee includes two prepared silk scarves, dye material and handouts. Students are welcome to bring additional washed and pre-mordanted (Alum) natural fibers to experiment with any leftover dye (time and dye exhaustion permitting). Students may also bring glass jars or milk jugs if we happen to have an abundance of leftover dye to take home for further experimentation.

This class meets in our second floor Annex, which is stair access only.

Instructor Bio

Stella Ranae has been a lover of the outdoors since she was a young girl growing up in Northeast Pa. Although she lived in a small coal mining town, she spent a lot of time on her extended families farm, where her love of nature and animals flourished at a young age.

She started by becoming a seller and avid collector of vintage and antique garments and textiles, where she has learned many processes of restoration and DIY alterations. Over time (20 years) she learned to combine the two using synthetic and natural dyes to continue in restoration and preservation of garments and textiles. The idea of eco dye came quickly with the move to Savannah, as she explored in her new environment and thought of her art in a more eco conscious manner.

She has recently visited both Ossabaw and Wassaw Islands to further her education and research on native natural indigo and hopes to be more involved with the many nature preserving local foundations. She was selected to participate in a juried show at Sulfur Studios, Textile Landscapes in Jan 2018, where her work of eco dye on silk was showcased.

She is a member of Savannah Fiber Arts Guild and resides in Savannah with her husband Pete. When not creating, you may find her involved in the many outdoor spoils of the city, where her education still continues.
