Single-Day Training and Education Instructed by:
Certified Clinical Perfusionist

Location: The City Club Raleigh, NC

Program Outline:
The ECMO Specialists training seminar is intended for Cardiac Perfusionists (CCP’s), Registered Nurses (RN’S), Respiratory Therapists (RT’s), Physician Assistants (PA’s), Nurse Practitioners (NP’s), EMT/Paramedics, Biomedical Engineers, and Students.

  • 1300 – 1700 Hands-on troubleshooting with various ECMO systems; including cannulae, pumps, oxygenators, priming, additional patient scenarios

Objectives: Educate, train, and enhance the skillset of current and interested ECMO Specialists on the basics of ECMO Mechanics. The ECMO Specialist Essentials Training targets the principles required by the ECMO Specialist to ensure optimal patient care at bedside or during transport.

Topics Covered: Arterial and venous cannulation (types and position), the components of an ECMO system and how they work, centrifugal pumps (how they work and what determines flow), differences between RVAD/LVAD/VV-ECMO/VA-ECMO, oxygenator function/failure (how to regulate p02/pC02), ABG analysis (patient vs circuit), mechanical ventilation on ECMO, aortic insufficiency, coronary perfusion, monitored parameters on ECMO (RPM, flow, line pressures, and venous saturation), shift reporting (what to know and look for).

After completion of The ECMO Specialist Essentials Training, the attendee will be able to identify and understand the Mechanics of an ECMO system:

  • Cannula types and positions
  • How a centrifugal pump works & what determines flow
    • Pre-load
    • After-load
    • RPM's
  • Differences between RVAD/LVAD/ECMO
  • How the oxygenator functions
  • ABG analysis - patient vs. circuit
  • Mechanical ventilation on ECMO
  • All aspects of troubleshooting (equipment, flow, cannula placement, & ABG’s…)
  • Aortic Insufficiency and its impact on ECMO
  • Coronary perfusion during ECMO

A Certificate of Completion will be presented to those who score >90% on post-exam
8hrs of CME Approved by NCRCB for RT's, approval pending for NC RN’s
