Description

ECMO Assisted CPR (ECPR)

Presented by Dr. Manetta, Director Cardiothoracic Surgery

By Departments of Cardiology and Emergency Medicine

This lecture is designed for hospital staff and EMS providers of all certification levels to learn concepts for Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ECPR) for patients in refractory cardiac arrest after unsuccessful defibrillation.

WHAT IS ECPR?

ECPR requires placement of catheters (tubes) in large blood vessels in the leg and a machine to take over the work of the heart and lungs until the heart can be restarted.

  • Review benefits of ECMO Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (ECPR) for both in-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (IHCA) and Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (OHCA) patients following their arrival in the Emergency Department.
  • Review with EMS ECMO criteria for ED pre-notification of inbound OHCA patients
  • Review AHA guidelines for ECPR as a possible alternative to conventional CPR
  • Review strategy to deploy ECPR as early as possible in Emergency rooms.
  • Review in-hospital criteria for “Code ECMO” activation

EMS participants will be awarded 1.5 hrs. of Non-Core CME
