ECIS Deep Dive in Mathematics (DDM) in partnership with Research Schools International

A 2015 international research report from our partner, Teacher Development Trust, showed that profound and lasting change in teaching practice and student outcomes stemmed from quality professional learning experiences of longer duration. Put simply, professional learning opportunities that provide sustained commitment with experiential components are the best choices for improving student outcomes. In alignment with that research, the ILA are delighted to host the ECIS Deep Dive course, developed in collaboration with Research Schools International.

The ECIS Deep Dive in Primary Mathematics course represents a fresh approach to professional learning, providing internationally-minded educators with research-based Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) principles as they relate to primary (elementary) school mathematics. In addition, the course supports teachers in adapting mathematics instruction to reflect MBE strategies, as well as in evaluating how changes in pedagogical practice affect student outcomes. Our approach necessitates a team registration, as opposed to an individual registration. Schools must send a minimum of three teachers (preferably five) in order to ensure the most effective experience possible.

Who is this programme for?

Primary teachers teaching and/or leading mathematics education.

What’s Involved?

This is a hybrid course. A two-day, sixteen-hour deep dive (held in various locations) kicks off the professional learning experience, followed by online, classroom-embedded implementation of the MBE strategies over a period of approximately ten weeks.

Research

My research focuses on how to foster the development of students' mathematical practices in early grades. I am especially interested in how young students develop the ability to justify their mathematical reasoning and the role it plays in their conceptual understanding. In addition, my work explores teacher learning, particularly urban K-12 teachers of mathematics (pre-service and in-service) and teacher leaders.
