Event description

Description

Liberalism in Europe is on the retreat. Populist-nationalist parties have made progress in elections across Europe, and influenced both national and European debates about the open society and the institutions that underpin it. What are the key factors behind the rise of anti-liberal populism? What effects is it having on the EU? What are the best ways for liberals to defend and advance the principles of an open society?

Please join us for a lunch event with Dr. Heather Grabbe and Sophia Gaston.

Heather Grabbe is the Director of the Open Society European Policy Institute. Formerly an adviser to a European Commissioner and a scholar, Dr. Grabbe has written extensively about the open society and nationalism in Europe.

Sophia Gaston is the Director of the Centre of Social and Political Risk at the Henry Jackson Society and a Visiting Research Fellow at the London School of Economics. She was until June the Deputy Director at Demos and lead the institute's studies of populism and nostalgia in Europe.
