Event description

Description

Based on real interviews of people living with grief, Echoes of Them explores the universality of grief and the impact those we love have on our lives after they have passed away.

Written and performed by Spread Art Artist in Residence Chelsea Unzner. Recipient of the 2017 Emerson Graduate Dean's Award in Boston, MA as part of Unzner's Master's Thesis Capstone project. Also performed at Starting Arts in San Jose, CA in July 2017.

Echoes of Them is carefully stitched together from interviews of real people about a major loss or losses in their lives. In watching one performer embody numerous different voices and use those voices to contemplate friends, parents, lovers, and grandparents who have died we see the simultaneous individuality and universality of grief. Everyone experiences loss and the irregular and familiar rhythms of grief find themselves in these narratives--sometimes as an ache, a visceral breathtaking kind of pain, or fond nostalgia.

When you lose someone, what do you remember about them with crystalline clarity and immediacy? What edges are smoothed out with time? What nuances of who they were and what they meant to you inform your life moving forward? In fact, what does moving forward look like--in that first year after losing them and beyond?

Chelsea Unzner recently received her Masters in Theatre and Communities, and Drama as Education from Emerson College '17. She also has a BA in Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies from UC Berkeley '11.
