Class Description
This workshop will review the diagnostic spectrum for eating disorders, according to DSM 5, with a specific focus on assessment and treatment. The second half of the presentation will focus on understanding Eating disorders and comorbid diagnoses, including substance use disorders and trauma and specific treatment considerations when those comorbidities are present. The presentation will review the relationship between trauma and eating disorders with attention paid to the neurobiology of trauma and how eating disorders serve as a form of affect regulation.Ryan C. Van Wyk, Psy.D, LP is a licensed psychologist practicing in MN. He is an experienced clinician, presenter, consultant, and writer focused on the integration of trauma informed care approaches into the systems that most significantly impact people, including mental health, medicine, education, and other social services. Dr. Van Wyk currently maintains a clinical practice at North Memorial Health's Mental Health and Addiction Clinic in Robbinsdale, Minnesota specializing in working with people whose lives have been impacted by trauma and who as a result have struggled with persistent dissociation, substance use issues, and eating disorder symptoms. Dr. Van Wyk is a behavioral health provider for the MN Army National Guard, with a current rank of Captain. He is the founder of MN Trauma Project, a non-profit organization created in 2015 that aims to increase awareness of trauma and its impact on individuals and communities and to increase accessibility to trauma informed care in the state of MN.
