More about World Central Kitchen & Miriam’s Kitchen

Miriam’s Kitchen:

“Our mission is to end chronic homelessness in Washington, DC.”

It starts with dignity: We connect with our chronically homeless guests with the highest quality, most nutritious meals in the city.

It happens through belonging. Our Case Managers build a community where each individual feels safe getting the help that they need, when they are ready to receive it.

It continues through change. In partnership with people who have experienced homelessness, we advocate for the D.C. government to make investments in the housing programs that are most proven to end homelessness.

It is completed with housing. The most successful intervention for chronic homelessness is Permanent Supportive Housing, which couples permanent housing with supportive services that target the specific needs of an individual.

Permanent supportive housing improves health outcomes; reduces the cost of emergency services, like ER visits and first responder services; and provides people with the tools they need to get their lives back. Best of all, it has a 92 percent success rate in Washington, D.C., which means it not only gets people of the streets, it helps them stay in housing. Ending chronic homelessness is possible. Miriam’s Kitchen is guiding people home.

World Central Kitchen:

World Central Kitchen was founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés following the devastating earthquake in Haiti. World Central Kitchen is a non-profit of chefs creating smart solutions to hunger and poverty in the areas of health, education, jobs, and disaster relief, serving over 5 million meals this past year to victims of natural disasters around the globe and being named one of Fast Company's Most Innovative Companies in Food.

In addition to natural disaster response, World Central Kitchen operates several long-term programs to help communities rebuild after a disaster. Some of these programs include a culinary school, bakery, and restaurant in Haiti, and a grant program in Puerto Rico to help smallholder farms and food businesses rebuild and flourish. This year the Chef Relief Team has responded to disasters in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Guatemala, the Carolinas, Florida, Indonesia, and California.
