Speakers & Talks
Chorbishop John D. Faris, JCOD is Adjunct Profes- sor of Eastern Canon Law at The Catholic University of America and pastor of Saint Louis Gonzaga Church in Utica, NY. He currently serves on national ecumenical dialogues with the Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches and has written extensively on Eastern Canon Law, ecumenism and the Holy Land. Chorbishop Faris will speak on “Eastern Churches in the Diaspora.” The presentation will focus on the various forms of governance structures utilized to provide pastoral care of Eastern Catholics outside their historical territories. We shall also explore the relationship of the hierarchs to the local Latin hierarchy and to the hierarchy of their own Church sui iuris.
Rev. Jobe Abbass, OFM, Conv., JCD, Professor of Canon Law, St. Paul University in Ottawa, will address Special Interritual Questions - With regard to CCEO cc. 29-38 on ascription. Since the Holy See has stated that the expression “Church sui iuris” can also mean the Latin Church and each of these Eastern canons contains that expression, to what extent does the Eastern legis- lation on ascription mean to supersede or fill lacunae in CIC cc. 111-112? This question can also be asked of CCO cc. 896-901 that cover entering into full com- munion with the Catholic Church. Do those Eastern canons (esp. c. 899) apply to Latin bishops who receive an Orthodox priest into full communion and want him to start celebrating Mass in a Latin parish? Again, what norms govern interritual concelebrations of Mass. Since there is no Latin canon, does CCEO canon 701 apply to the Latin Church?
Very Rev. Nicholas Rachford, JCL is Judicial Vicar of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Parma and pastor of St. Nicholas parish in Lorain, OH. Father Nicholas serves on the Ohio Catholic Con- ference Religious Freedom Advisory Committee. He will explain the history of the restriction on ordaining married Eastern-rite Catholic men to the presbyterate, comment on various documents issued from Rome, relate the efforts to ordain married men and conclude with the recent decree permitting the ordinations.
