Event description

Description

East of Culture - Different Sounds is an inspiring music festival introducing mind-blowing rising talents and world-class performers, among them Juno Reactor and Nouvelle Vague. The festival focuses on high artistic quality and inventiveness and seeks to showcase phenomenal musicians and unforgettable music. This year, over five festival days we are going to see artists from 14 countries of the world and 3 continents. At exclusive concerts in Poland we will hear only the most prominent representatives of such genres as new wave, afro-jazz, electronic music, avant-rock or broadly understood world music.

Like every year, we are offering a programme that is varied, original and transcends music borders and stereotypes. In the past we presented artists who through their work set new trends and styles. This year we also have the pleasure to feature bands considered to be pioneers or absolute masters of their genres.

The first star of this year’s festival is Juno Reactor, the legend of goa trance and psychedelic music. Our next headliner is the French collective Nouvelle Vague, famous for their excellent original arrangements of big hits in such genres as wave, punk and post punk and new romantic music. The musicians offer bold rearrangements of legendary songs by The Clash, Joy Division, Depeche Mode, Killing Joke and many others.

Joining Juno Reactor and Nouvelle Vague will be bands signed with the Belgian record label Crammed Discs, recognised worldwide as a boundary-breaking, adventurous and involved label that puts out a wide variety of music, ranging from world, through rock, jazz, new wave, to contemporary electronic music. As part of Crammed Discs’s showcase during the festival, at exclusive concerts in Poland we will have an opportunity to hear five artists signed with the label, namely Tuxedomoon, Konono Nº1, Skip & Die, Aksak Maboul and Aquaserge. The young French band will also perform their own sets as Aquaserge’s gig will complete the showcase of Crammed Discs.

The festival also showcases unexplored cinema, literature and contemporary art and introduces the most important trends in the culture and art of the Eastern Partnership countries. Children are invited to take part in Little Different Sounds, a series of workshops focused on developing their creative potential in a fun way.

All events are FREE and UNTICKETED

East of Culture is a cultural project integrating artists from cities in eastern Poland (Białystok, Lublin and Rzeszów) and artists from Eastern Partnership countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldavia and Ukraine). It is executed by the National Centre for Culture and the three Polish cities. The project aims to present and help discover unique aspects of each culture as well as to facilitate the sharing of artistic experiences. Over time, the festival became a bridge connecting our eastern partners with broader European culture. 2017 marks the 5th edition of East of Culture. The project has been made possible thanks to the involvement and support of creative groups, local governments in Eastern Poland as well as the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
