Event Details

This event will focus on learning from past experiences of shelter and settlement responses in the East & Horn of Africa region by actively engaging actors using case studies from the Shelter Projects publication. It will bring together practitioners, academics and other relevant stakeholders to collectively review case studies from past editions, focusing on “what worked well” and “what didn’t work well” in the past. It will also provide an opportunity to share experiences from recent shelter and settlement responses in the region, which will be reviewed and considered for inclusion in the next edition.

Shelter Projects (http://shelterprojects.org/) is a bi-annual publication which compiles case studies and overviews of shelter and settlement responses in support of disaster- and conflict-affected populations, implemented by international organisations, UN agencies, NGOs and host governments. The workshop aims at converting this body of knowledge – now including over 230 case studies from over 60 organisations and 80 countries – into a vehicle for active learning and dissemination, with the long-term objective of providing further coherence in future national and international responses to shelter needs.

Global Shelter Cluster

The Global Shelter Cluster (GSC) is an Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) coordination mechanism that supports people affected by natural disasters and internally displaced people affected by conflict with the means to live in safe, dignified and appropriate shelter. The GSC enables better coordination among all shelter actors, including local and national governments, so that people who need shelter assistance get help faster and receive the right kind of support.

Shelter Projects is overseen by a Global Shelter Cluster working group composed of several shelter experts from international organizations: https://www.sheltercluster.org/working-group/shelter-projects-working-group
