Earn A Bike Guatemala Summer Trip
Sat, Jul 1, 2017, 7:00 PM – Sat, Jul 8, 2017, 10:00 PM CST
Earn A Bike Guatemala is a unique program that promotes health and wellness amongst youth in GUATEMALA. The Earn A Bike evolved from a need to get kids playing outside and away from sugary drinks and food with low nutritional value. Earn A Bike members believe that the best way to get our kids active and eating healthy is by setting the example and therefore four times a year we host Earn A Bike.
Earn A Bike relies on volunteers and community members to present the message and set the example. Earn A Bike empowers youth with the skills and knowledge to ride and maintain their bicycle and gives the parents the tools and knowledge to support their kids and make changes to support a healthy lifestyle.
Earn A Bike GUATEMALA happens once a year. Members from the Earn A Bike San Antonio travel to San Marcos Guatemala to work with a community of children that live at one of the largest coffee plantations in the area. At each event volunteers and staff, guide children youth ages 7-14 through a 3-day program that teaches them how to assemble and maintain their bicycle, the fundamentals of bicycle safety, we discuss nutrition, health, and leadership. Earn A Bike also works with the parents through workshops designed to give them the tools and knowledge to create a supportive environment that encourages, education, health, wellness and future orientation.
At each event, participants earn a new bicycle, helmet, set of safety lights, a bicycle lock and a new family of caring cycling adults. Parents leave the program with ideas on how to collaborate work together to empower, become advocates for cycling in their community, adopt healthy cooking practices and a new group of friends. Volunteers leave the program empowered and knowing that they contributed to improving the life of a child in a less fortunate environment.
