Event Details

The Early X Foundation is excited to kick-off the next phase in the evolution of its incubation process with its next Discovery Day on July 21 - this time with several very interesting technologies chosen with our partners at Caly Poly - San Luis Obisbo and Pacific Northwest National Labs.  PNNL is one of only ten Department of Energy national labs, sister lab to Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, Oakridge and others with the Department of Homeland Security being their largest client.

At this event, you will have the unique opportunity to see some extraordinary, pre-commercialization Intellectual Property assets up close and personal.  We think you will be blown away by the IP!

The Early X incubation approach starts with a creative process designed to take a single existing Intellectual Property Asset/Patent or pre‐patent research project and develop multiple new revenue opportunities.

In 2011 we partnered with University of California, Santa Barbara to pilot the exploration of four IP assets developed through University research. Our process identified more than 130 potential new revenue streams the University might consider as licensing opportunities.

The success of the pilot has led to the formation of the Early X Foundation which will provide a vehicle for identifying, developing and commercializing expanded application of underutilized intellectual property contributed to the Early X Foundation by university, government and non‐profit research laboratories.

At this event, the following technologies will be presented:

  • Aluminide Coatings Technology ("The poor-man's stainless steel", presented with PNNL)
  • Enhanced Decision Making through Advanced Reasoning Systems (originally developed for anti-terrorism analysis, presented with PNNL)
  • Optical Laser Technology Advancement ("Build a Better Mouse!", presented with Cal Poly)

You will have the opportunity to help us and the laboratory scientist inventor discover multiple monetization opportunities.

We will be looking for licensing as well as start-up opportunities.  Our mission is to aid our partner research laboratories monetize their Intellectual Property Assets.
What's Next?

After the Discovery Day event, teams of technologists, business mentors, and individuals trained in the Early X process will further develop commercialization plans based on the insights uncovered during the Discovery Day.  We will assign several teams of MBA and Law students specially trained in our Early X Process to develop multiple “Go-To-Market” plans for each IP Asset.  You will have the opportunity to mentor these teams as they spend the next 4-months developing their commercialization opportunities.

On December 11, 2013 the MBA/Law teams will present their “Go-To-Market” plans in a Private Screening especially for Early X board members, donors and mentors.  This “first look” opportunity is our way of thanking our friends for their support.  On January 17, 2013, we will host a Public Screening of the plans and invite a large audience of potential investors, licensees and partners to see the plans.

The goal of the process will be to ultimately spin off the technology into new businesses or otherwise license the technology to grow the business sector, spur employment, and provide a revenue stream to our partners and the Foundation.

By Invitation Only – First Come, First Serve

Our participating audience will be limited to 40 executives from a wide range of professions and backgrounds. This event will sell out so it is important to respond quickly.

  1. We will have 3 or 4 IP Assets to discover and build market feasibility opportunities around.  Each will take about 90-minutes.  We ask that you stay for each.
  2. Release Form:  After receiving your RSVP, we will email you an “Assign and Release” which you will be required to sign and return prior to the Discovery Day event.
  3. There are no obligations to participate after the July 21st Discovery Day event.  However, if you see some exciting opportunities and wish to stay involved we welcome you support in mentoring the student team as they build their plans.
  4. For those that participate in the July 21st Discovery Day event, you will be invited to attend the Early X Private Screening event in December where the teams will present their “Go-To-Market” Plans.  These plans may be pure licensing plays or start-up opportunities.
