Description

Introduction

Would you like an antidote to the target fever currently gripping the NHS? Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) are currently undergoing changes to ensure that people with first episode psychosis can access a NICE package of care within 2 weeks of referral. Managing change can be difficult if attempted in isolation, therefore as part of the South EIP Programme, the South Central EIP teams have co-designed an EIP Peer Review process to surface and share best practice. Our focus will be on recognising local achievements and co-producing the way forward. This is a real opportunity to achieve the best for people with psychosis and recognise system blocks and find creative ways around them by shaping the future together.

Purpose

The aims of the EIP Peer Review workshop are as follows:

  1. Support EIP teams in identifying achievements and resources to drive further improvements;
  2. Use the talents and experience of people with lived experience and staff to build a powerful narrative around the early psychosis standards;
  3. Harness the existing know-how and expertise of clinicians and managers in further developing their skills in promoting excellence.

The EIP Peer Reviews will be co-designed with people who use services, carers and staff in to complement the data gathered from the EIP Matrix Audit. The reviews have a qualitative focus and aim to elicit information about the service from the perspective of the service user, carer, and staff. We will be using Appreciative Enquiry, an approach which builds on success by facilitating respondents to tell their story, identifying strengths and plans for future development.

Objectives

Participants will learn various ways in which to have powerful conversations that can shift attitudes and practice for improved outcomes, such as:

  1. Listening attentively without judgment
  2. Probing with authentic curiosity
  3. Socratic questioning (open-ended questions to stimulate creative solutions)
  4. Summarising and paraphrasing
  5. Eliciting aspirations and commitment to improvement

Outcome

The workshop will use the collective expertise of people who use services, carers and staff to reach a consistent set of principles in how to conduct the Peer Review visits and provide constructive feedback that drives improvement.

Facilitator

The workshops will be facilitated by Valerie James. Valerie was a Senior Fellow in Leadership at the King’s Fund for 10 years and was Faculty for the London Deanery’s Darzi fellows 2013-16. Previously a clinician, she now works independently on transformational change, is a visiting Senior Fellow at St George’s, London and Kingston Universities and has a reputation for being at the forefront of innovation in developing health service leaders. She has taught the Appreciative Enquiry method to mental health service users and many health service clinicians and managers.
