Event description

Description

Explore life in Brooklyn during the Revolutionary War era with Brooklyn Connections and the Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park. Learn how Dutch, African and Native American people in the Village of Flatbush were impacted by the Battle of Brooklyn and British occupation throughout the war. The day includes an object based learning activity that uses everyday objects to give insights into the lives of the Lefferts family and members of their household that included enslaved Africans. Afterwards a walk through Prospect Park will reveal historic markers of the Revolutionary War and include stories based on real life experiences of members of the Lefferts family.

Educators will leave this workshop with ideas for connecting the day's knowledge on early Brooklyn and the Revolutionary War to curriculum through archival resources and lessons that can be recreated in their classrooms. This workshop includes a walking tour and takes place rain or shine. (CTLE Credits: 5)

NOTE: Brooklyn Connections workshops are intended for educators and school administrators and is an approved NYSED Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) sponsor. This special accreditation enables educators to utilize Brooklyn Connections professional learning workshops toward fulfilling their mandated 100 hours of approved CTLE credits.
