Event description

Join us for the Early Bird Investigator Event and explore both the history of this House of Corrections that dates back to 1796 and the spirits that allegedly are still incarcerated there. The building consists of a two-story frame building, once the home of the jailers, and an attached brick building, which on the first floor contains cells for the prisoners, complete with bars on the windows. The second floor, which today is an open meeting room, is now used for the meetings of the EGHPS (East Greenwich Historical Preservation Society) who maintain the property. The more cooperative prisoners were housed in the cells upstairs, which have since been removed. There were two hand carved figures, each 30 inch high, which were above the entrance of the jail, one a black man, the other a white man, one a robber, the other a murderer, and they were handcuffed together to show that equal justice was given to all. The Old Jail has been home to murderers, theives and three generations of jailers of a local family that kept an institution for over 100 years, including the first female jailer in North America.

Witnesses to phenomena have reported full-bodied apparitions seen, to unexplained voices saying Hi, to creepy sensations when in the basement, especially near solitary confinement, Historians' reports suggest that when the cove flooded and the tide came in, solitary was flooded and men died. Are they still down there yelling "Help Me" ? Witnesses have heard just that and our own recorders have as well in the basement, near the entrance.

Join Ocean State Paranormal's quest for truth as we invite you to investigate the history and the phenomena at the Old Kent County Jail. 100% of the procceds are going to be donated to EGHPS for the extensive restorative and structural repairs needed to ensure that this testament to RI History is there forever !!!
