Working together to help children thrive
We know that for children to succeed and for schools and communities to narrow the achievement gap, there must be greater access for all children to high-quality early learning experiences, along with greater alignment between the early years and the early grades.
To achieve this vision, the Children’s Institute launched Early Works, an initiative that brings parents, schools and communities together to meet the needs of children, birth through eight. Early Works has two demonstration sites that serve as learning laboratories for school districts, policy-makers, and communities statewide working to improve learning for Oregon children.
One of those sites is at Earl Boyles Elementary in east Portland, where visitors can see first-hand how early learning, family engagement and health partnerships can come together to help children learn and thrive. If you are interested in visiting, please complete the registration.

Ericka Guynes Principal, Earl Boyles Elementary/David Douglas School District
Ericka is the Principal of Earl Boyles Elementary school. She has been in education for 25 years, and is passionate about educating and supporting children and families. This is her ninth year at Earl Boyles. She comes from a rural background in Northern California where the importance of community was instilled at a very early age.
She has a wealth of experience in the education arena. During the 25 years, she spent 13 years as a classroom teacher, 3 years as a Teacher on Special Assignment, and 7 as an elementary principal. Over her tenure, she has taught at multiple grade levels, 2nd grade-8th grades, in a variety of ways such as looping and blends. She has taught middle school (6th-8th grade blend self-contained) in a K-8 school located in rural Northern California, but the majority of her experience has been in the David Douglas School District in South East Portland.
She is a member of the Distinguished Leaders Council and NAESP, the 2013 National Distinguished Principal of the Year, OESPA Past President, COSA President Elect, and serve on the Educator Effectiveness Leadership Cadre for her district.
Currently she is partnering with the Children's Institute to implement the Early Works initiative to demonstrate how aligning early childhood education and developing programs with the elementary grades can ensure school readiness and future success.
One of her most important roles is a mother to her two daughters, Isabella, 20, and Claire, 17.
