About this event
DYSPLA VR Exhibition at LSBU - 5th December 2022
11am – 8:30pm, Borough Road Gallery 103 Borough Road SE1 0AA
(11am - 6:45pm for all VR work / 7:00pm Reception / 7:30pm - 8:30pm Guest Speaker Talk)
DYSPLA curates a collection of digital arts and VR works by world-renowned Neurodivergent Artists. Showcasing a range of content intended to inspire audiences to reflect on a “new” artistic concept — the Neurodivergent Aesthetics.
DYSPLA investigates this unique neurodivergent heritage — still very much under-represented or fully understood, by involving a mix of artists working in various digital formats to explore the Neurodivergent Aesthetic a new term coined by DYSPLA to illustrate how those who see, think, and experience the world differently from the subjective norms, create unpredictable stories and tell them in a nonlinear way.
Creatives such as; Pablo Picasso, Agatha Christie, Steve McQueen, Quentin Tarantino, Antony Gormley, and Steven Spielberg are just a few artists on an endless list, that all have neurodivergence in common. DYSPLA believes this is the beginning of explaining their genius.
The definition of the Neurodivergent Aesthetic will differ from creator to maker, from audience to spectator, we argue. Depending on their neurological difference, each individual will experience the world differently. The Neurodivergent Aesthetic is created and viewed by those who see, think and experience the world differently from the subjective norm.
Supported by the research fund of ACI, as well as funding from Arts Council England (ACE), DYSPLA VR Tour kicks off at the Borough Road Gallery, London South Bank University on 5th December 2022. In addition to the exhibition, there will be a talk by a neurodivergent artist, sharing the experience of navigating through the creative industry. The ACI researcher, Luc Sung will also present his research work for discussion.
The exhibition includes digital works by:
Lindsay Seers / Keith Sargent: Care(less) (2019) is a highly original immersive 360-degree VR film by British artists Lindsay Seers & Keith Sargent. The work uses the hallucinatory quality of VR technology to convey an embodied experience of what it is to be in an aging body.
D-Fuse : Intersection — w/ Observatory — Audio: Gauthier Keyaerts (2020) The nature of time is mysterious. Intersection is a VR experiment that invites you to drift around London and partake in detached observations.
Natalia Skobeeva: True Stories of Two Mormots (2019) — During the COVID-19 Lockdown, Natalia collaborated with her 6-year-old daughter on a script for a VR project. The script pictures the experiences of a fictive species within their (un)familiar environment and explores the difficulties that Natalia faces as a neurodiverse artist, an immigrant, a female, and a mother, with input from her daughter and her own perspective.
George Jasper Stone: Save Yourself (2022) — A reference to decorative sculpture through the lens of queer intimacy.
DYSPLA: DYSPLA_touch (2022) is a collection of 13 short VR films that can be experienced in any order, all exploring the ‘narrative of touch’ from the perspective of a neurodivergent woman, who exhibits traits of High-sensitivity and Tactile Synesthesia, which are used to sculpt these poetic experiences in real-time.
Luc Sung: Sorry, I disagree… (2022) — A collection of desktop documentaries made by neurotypical and neurodivergent participants, featuring the thought process of answering a difficult question.
The confirmed artist speaker is Natalia Skobeeva who will be on the guest panel at 7:30 pm
