Description

PC READS is bringing The Dyslexia Training Institute to Park City on Saturday, April 21st!

Kelli Sandman-Hurley and Tracey Block-Zaretsky will provide 3 hours of information, including the Dyslexia for a Day Simulation and an introduction to Structured Word Inquiry. Breakfast and snacks will be included. The event is FREE and an excellent opportunity for teachers to learn more about dyslexia, which is the most common reason students struggle with reading, writing and spelling. More details are below.

This event has been made possible in large part by the generosity of The Hall Family Foundation which is focused on early detection and treatment of children in the Park City Area with the gift of dyslexia.

SIMULATION: DYSLEXIA FOR A DAY

Experience what it feels like to be intellectual capable, but not successful with basic literacy skills. Participate in discussions on how these struggles affect students, what causes these struggles, and how to help these students. The simulations are designed to help participants gain a better understanding of what a student experiences in the classroom and with homework.

OVERVIEW OF DYSLEXIA

Participants will be introduced to the signs and symptoms of dyslexia and learn about many popular myths. The presentation includes an overview of scientific research, discussion of the remediations supported by research and suggested current accommodations available to children and adults with dyslexia.

STRUCTURED WORD INQUIRY (SWI)

Structured Word Inquiry (SWI) is an instructional approach to teaching how to understand the structure of English words to improve reading (decoding, comprehension), writing (spelling, composition) and vocabulary. Although it is relatively new in the dyslexia world, it isn't anything new for understanding the English language. Learn what SWI is, how it is implemented, and tools used in the investigative and learning process of SWI.
