Dynamic Anatomy Series: A Deeper Dive with Deane Juhan
Event Information
About this event
A deeper weaving and expansion upon the anatomical, neural, and physiological understanding underlying movement therapies of all kinds.
Many previous webinars hosted by Yoga Kula have presented a wide array of perspectives on the body and its control of movement, development of better postures and skills for living in the field of gravity, and the root causes of the contrary development of dysfunctional habits and patterns that create pain, tissue damage, and restrict optimal functions that are disrupting our lives in so many ways.
This new series will be in part a comprehensive review of much of this earlier material, seeking to integrate even further the vast complexities of their interactions for vibrant health on one hand and for our understanding of dysfunctional developments on the other.
Over the past year and a half of presenting this material, I have been deepening and widening my own further research into these issues. The new topics that will be added.
In this new series will be further cutting-edge knowledge about how it is that we can change old habits that impair us and develop new ones that will lead to more and more optimal health and more and more freedom in our lives.
Included will be research on the polyvagal nerve functions between the brain and all our organs that effect our entire autonomic system. Chief among these new understandings is the ways in which a healing system can shift from the active go-go functions of the sympathetic nervous system that strongly stimulates our whole being over to the parasympathetic system that brings with it the quieting, calming effects that best support replenishment and healing processes.
One of the insights emerging from this research is the appreciation of one of the primary needs we require for calming the mind and healing the body—the sense of safety so necessary to the healing of trauma and degenerative forces at work within us. Why a sense of safety is of utmost importance, and how to provide if for ourselves, our students and clients will be presented.
Another powerful area of emerging research has been the profound implications of the nervous system’s capacity for neuroplasticity. We are not stuck—as the old paradigm has told us for a very long time—with the neurons and their interactive structure that we were born with. This means that, contrary to the older view, new neurons can be produced when needed, and the specific pathways in which they are interconnected are in fact constantly undergoing revision that is triggered by new ways of feeling and moving. How we behave is continually changing who we are. The brain and all of the nervous system are continually changing themselves through our beliefs, our intentions and our actions.
These new insights open up a truly vast arena for our active engagement of new cognitive understandings, new emotional relationships with our bodies and the world around us, new beliefs in our own capacities for change that can powerfully and lastingly change our powers of healing mentally and physically.
This new series will examine how all these scientific developments impact our recovery from injuries, the healing of traumatic events and responses, the reversal of degenerative conditions, and the many processes of healing that effect all of our tissues. We will be examining the impact of this new knowledge on our anatomy, our physiology, and our ever-changing neural landscape.
All of this material, as we weave it more coherently into an ultimate vision of how our bodies, our minds and our deeper souls can interact to lead us to ever more optimal function, self-development, and freedom from impairments that have limited our potentials for a vibrant life.
“Deane’s classes are outright fascinating, informative and empowering. The visuals of the vast amount of slides would be worth the price of the class alone. It is Deane’s well researched ability along with his decades of hands-on experience which solidifies an understanding that’s broader from what I already knew. I learned new facts today that I will immediately use when explaining to my clients what’s going on in their bodies." -- Fawn Christianson, Trager practitioner and yoga instructor
