DYC Foundation Tour - Detroit Yacht Club Clubhouse (September 12th, 2017)
Tue, Sep 12, 2017, 6:30 PM
Normally open only to members and their guests, the DYC Foundation provides the general public an opportunity to tour the historic Detroit Yacht Club clubhouse through scheduled tours on selected dates. Tour leaders are trained in the history and architecture of this building that is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Tours typically last between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on the size of the group.
One of the architectural treasures of Detroit, the clubhouse was designed by the George D. Mason Company in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. George Mason was also the architect of numerous significant buildings, including the Masonic Temple, Gem Theater/Century Club and the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Dedicated by Detroit industrialist Gar Wood on August 30, 1923, the DYC clubhouse encompasses 93,000 square feet, making it the largest, and probably the grandest, yacht club facility in the United States.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
Free parking is available at the Detroit Yacht Club clubhouse. Note that the building is located on the north-east part of Belle Isle (about 3/4 of the way around). The building just at the end of the bridge is the Detroit Boat Club and is not our location. Please continue around the island until you pass the Nature Zoo and the golf practice range.
