Event description

Description

A strong narrative is a fundamental aspect of any meaningful experience with immersive virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Storytelling is quickly emerging as a key UX design skill for designing immersive experiences. While VR storytelling is typically equated with 3D filmmaking, it actually has a place in both AR and VR. In this presentation we will learn how AR and VR can benefit from good storytelling UX design. We will cover 7 essential VR storytelling techniques that anyone designing for VR UX can benefit from!

In this session, we will explore the power and importance of storytelling in collaborative virtual environments with social VR/AR especially when critical decision-making is on the line: in healthcare, training, sustainability and in both B2C and B2B experiences.

You will learn how VR storytelling is intertwined in the immersive narrative, and how AR storytelling for mixed reality can act as a container for your experience. We will explore how immersive experience can be made accessible.

In the workshop, we will provide the opportunity to participate in Design Thinking activities to develop narratives for VR/AR. We will learn how storytelling can help you avoid boring interaction design, an engagement killer in VR/AR UX design.

Agenda:

  1. Introduction to IDF as well as how people can become involved with the Portland IDF chapter.
  2. Presentation/workshop by Frank Spillers (Chief Experience Officer at Experience Dynamics and an Instructor with IDF. He is a VR/AR UX subject matter expert with 20 years of experience in the field).
  3. Facilitated design thinking activities where attendees will construct an “immersive story prototype” for VR/AR experiences.

More details about the event logistics will be emailed to registered guests in March.

Note: Attendees will have the chance to win free and discounted annual membership to the Interaction Design Foundation (IDF). IDF is an independent nonprofit with the mission to raise the level of global design education to an Ivy League standard, while at the same time reducing costs as much as possible. Since 2002, IDF has built a sustainable collaboration and education platform and has grown to reach a global community of 455 local groups in 92 countries.
