DWP 2017: Wild Color: NW Pigments & Dyes

Explore the native color of the Pacific Northwest in this mini-workshop highlighting dye plants and mineral pigments, led by Scott Sutton and Megan Mesloh.
Part 1 of this 3-hour workshop, students will learn about basic natural dye techniques, with introductions to local and regional dye plants. Plant ID, plant-processing, fiber prepartion and dye techniques will all be covered.
Part 2 will explore natural color as derived from clays, minerals and rocks of the Northwest. Students will get a hands-on lesson in grinding and processing clays and minerals into usable pigments, as well as how to blend those pigments with oils and binders to create paints.
Students will leave with a swatch card of samples, and paints, highlighting the regional and seasonal native color of the Pacific Northwest.
