DWP 2017: Growing Up with Design: Approaching Family and Community with Des...

From a systems-level thinking perspective, design considerations don’t stop when we take off our professional hats. As one of the most creative and innovative cities in the United States, how can Portlanders cultivate a culture and expectation of design for the generations to come? This workshop extends the importance of design into the area of family/home life and considers how families (no matter what size) can leverage design-thinking principles when raising the next generation. We view raising children as an opportunity to incorporate design and design thinking in order to deepen community ties and support, practice resilience and teach the iterative process, improve health and connection to place/space, build understanding, empathy, and sense of difference, and teach problem solving and team building skills with diversity of viewpoints and backgrounds. Join us to consider what your ideals are, what fails, what may or may not be possible in the effort to weave design and design thinking meaningfully into your family and community life.
